Careers In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry

By Louise Adams

What does FMCG mean?

The term FMCG is used to describe goods that are quick to get 'used up' and generally only last a short number of days of weeks. The term FMCG means Fast Moving Consumer Goods. In contrast to fast moving consumer goods are durable goods and major appliances such as TV's or kitchen appliances, these are generally not replaces within a year hence them not being 'fast moving.'

FMCG usually have an extremely short shelf life, this can be due to consumer requirements or generally that the product itself degenerates quickly and therefore needs replacing fast.

Fast moving consumer goods always have an extremely short shelf life and therefore certain types of consumer goods such as foods (meat, dairy, fruit, veg) and toiletries and alcohol as well as cleaning products have a fast turnaround.

Consumers think of fast moving consumer goods as being the everyday items they buy, things they don't need to consider too much before they buy and things that are typically very low in price.

Marketers would view FMCG products as being high in volume, low in contribution margins, and having a high stock turnover.

If you are looking for a career in FMCG then you should aim to register with a recruitment specialist. By registering with a recruiter you will gain access to jobs which you would not normally come across. This is because often FMCG jobs are worked on by recruitment agents on an exclusive basis.

Applying for a job through a recruiter gives you a much better chance of getting your CV noticed. Often there are hundreds of CV's sent for each job advertised these days so it can be difficult to ensure that your CV is going to be seen without working with a trusted recruiter.
