By Claire Fishman

Do you DJ for friends at parties and other events? Have you ever dreamed of turning your DJ skills into a job? If so then why not consider a wedding DJ as a career? You could earn some money and do what you love. Obviously you will need the right gear and an ability to promote yourself, as well as the ability to provide perfect music for a wedding reception.

These days being a DJ is quite easy, you can DJ with traditional record decks or with a laptop and software that plays MP3's. You also need to have good business sense and get a good reputation as your skills as a DJ may well be spread by word of mouth.

Before the big day, do an interview with the couple and discover the songs they would like to hear, as well as the overall type of music they prefer. They will also have a better idea regarding musical tastes of the wedding guests. Show that you are enthusiastic and passionate about creating a fantastic party, as well as being flexible and able to accommodate the couples preferences.

Your own taste in music is not necessarily going to be the same as the party guests. It is easy for a DJ to fall into the trap of playing the kind of music they themselves like only to become become frustrated if the guests are not dancing. At a wedding reception it is important to play the music that people know and can sing along to, as well as dance to. Play popular hit songs as well as love ballads, especially for the married couple's first dance!

Preparing a flexible play list of tunes and presenting it to the couple beforehand is a good way for them to trigger memories of other songs they may wish to hear. They're will be a lot of nostalgic songs they maybe haven't have thought of.

Another important aspect of being a DJ is the ability to read a crowd to sense the type of music that they are responding to positively. When you start your set you should congratulate the happy couple and state that you are happy to take requests. When the married couple leaves for their honeymoon let the audience know this and play their favorite song.

Music has an uncanny ability to trigger nostalgic feelings, so it is a great idea to try and play the songs that the happy couple know and love from throughout their relationship. Your persona is another important factor as a DJ at a wedding reception, always be approachable, friendly and look like your enjoying yourself as much as the guests. Keep business cards handy too; other guests may want to employ your services in the future.

Being a DJ is all about having fun and getting party guests to have fun. Nothing beats the buzz of playing the right tunes and getting party guests on their feet and dancing the night away. All you need is the right gear and the right tunes and you can be a success!
