A Hospitality Apprenticeship - Your Stepping Stone To An Excellent Career

By Craig Abrahart

There are hundreds of hotels, hostels, holiday parks, and B&Bs in the UK where holiday makers go to enjoy a break, not to mention all of those abroad! Customer service is very important for workers in these kinds of roles. If you feel that you are the kind of person that can offer outstanding customer service then a hospitality apprenticeship could be for you.

In the hospitality sector, the customer comes first. Meeting their needs by working together with a team is the aim of the game, and the types of duties that are required to be done are wide. If you have a great personality, patience and love working with the public then taking on a hospitality apprenticeship could help you to start your career. You could work on reception or behind the scenes, the possibilities are wide.

Hotel apprenticeships operate along the same lines as any other apprenticeship: you'd have the same kind of rights as the people you work with because, officially, you're not just a trainee but also an employee. This means you're entitled to any benefits on offer, like paid holidays and paid sick leave ... and a wage!

As the company is paying for your course, the minimum wage for 16-18 year olds and 19+ year olds in their first year is 2.60 per hour, but research shows that most people on apprenticeships earn around 170 per week. If you are 19+ and have completed your first year, the pay goes up to the normal national minimum wage.

Once you've completed your apprenticeship, you'll have a recognised Level 2 qualification and a decision to make: do you start right away and work your way up? Or are you prepared to invest a bit more time and gain higher qualifications through an advanced apprenticeship? And here's something well worth bearing in mind: there's always the possibility of going abroad and working in a hotel somewhere outside the UK. After all, most hotels tend to be located in nice areas!
